LANGUAGE ARTS
Homebase & CORE A: 7:30am-8:47am
Our class uses Read180 as an intervention program and core curriculum with 6th grade standards. There are modifications and accommodations to access core instruction.
INTERVENTION
For intervention we use various programs and strategies to help students make progress in reading and writing.

Some of our interventions include the following resources:
CORE INSTRUCTION
We use StudySync as our main curriculum resource. StudySync offers comprehensive reading and writing lessons centered around the common core standards. The curriculum was co-created by Dr. Douglas Fischer, a leading writer and researcher of curriculum and intervention.
We use some of the following novels to understand reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, figurative language, text types and grammar.

ā
A Long Walk to Water: A story of two different people giving their accounts of life during 2 different times in Sudan. It deals with topics of identity, perserverance, and scarcity of resources.
Red Kayak: A story of a teen who feels responsible for a tragic accident. Topics in this book include guilt, responsibility, friendship and family.
Tuck Everlasting: Would you live forever if you could? One family and a girl spend time trying to answer this question. The main topics are life, honesty, wonder and justice.
If time allows and other books are a better fit for our class, I will try to find novels that work with our group. Other books we have read in the past are Because of Mr. Terupt and Shouting at the Rain.
